hating on destiny 2 storytelling
it is absolutely driving me nuts how reliant on the in-world 'conversation scenes' Destiny has become, and one of the chief reasons is that making the player experience conversations through the standard first-person view while characters stand in place completely forfeits the fundamental and essential practice of direction in fictional dialogue. All cutscenes, movies, TV et cetera have at least some direction to their camera, even if it's the most spartan Mass Effect-type dynamic shot/reverse shot. Books have descriptions of character body language and environmental qualia to place a scene in your mind. Theater, which D2's scenes in question are probably most similar to, at least has a need for strong body language and blocking, or at least actors probably turning different directions during a scene, and generally the audience is not looking at it from slightly above eye level. Destiny's scenes have absolutely none of this. Nearly every conversation scene is utterly deflated by it. It's crazy! It's so frustrating!! I have issues with the content of the scenes too, but you guys are just sending this material out to die!!! pure audio logs are a more powerful delivery than this shit
